In writing my weekly column for ABCNews.com, I often find what I think might be the most mundane topics are the ones that trigger the greatest reader response. For instance, over the past two weeks, I've been bombarded with emails in response to two recent columns about student loans.
For more than a week, these columns ranked among the most emailed articles on ABCNews.com.
The
first column explained a new federal program,
Income Based Repayment, that is intended to ease the payment burden on recent college graduates who borrowed heavily to attend school.
A flood of reader questions prompted me to write
a second column on the student-loan issue. The thrust of this column was that both parents and students should pay close attention to the details behind student loans. Based on the emails I received, it seems to me that failure to understand these details contributed to the problems people have with student loans.
The bottom line is that for many families loans are a necessity, but making sure you know how these loans can pay off down the road.
